Caught in the Act — Lee’s first novel was set in Spain. Brian Douglas, divorced American photographer with a weakness for the bottle, is in the wrong place at the wrong time and shoots a picture that gets him in deep trouble. He runs for his life, circling through Spain to seek answers that will clear him. In the process he must clean the sludge from his personal carburetor. Published in 1968 by William Morrow, then in paper and four languages.

Assignation in Algeria — Brian Douglas returns, heading for North Africa after his lady love disappears with a disliked competitor. He follows her to Oran, into the bleak Saharan desert, and finally to an encampment where she is held, discovering a major missile conspiracy against the Sixth Fleet. A Russian spy and an Arab named Tewfik help him thwart it. Published in 1971 by Walker, and in four languages.

The Ninth Man — A World War II book, based on fact and set in the U.S. In 1942, the Germans landed eight saboteurs by submarine, four in New York and four in Florida. Within two weeks all eight were caught. This is the story of the ninth man, who got away. Lee’s first best-seller, the book was published by Doubleday and Dell, in several magazines excerpts, seven foreign languages, a 25-part radio serial, and has been optioned for films six times.

The Thirteenth Hour — The final days of WWII. Henry Bascom, an American OSS agent, joins a crack British commando unit in an effort to kidnap Hitler from his Berlin bunker. The attempt goes horribly wrong and Bacsom seeks shelter in the ruins with a wounded comrade. Pursued by Germans, threatened by the Russian advance, Bascom struggles for survival in a doomed city until he stumbles on an incredible plot to save Hitler. Published by Doubleday and Dell, in four languages, and as a 30-part radio serial. Also selected as a Book-of-the-Month Club alternate.

Lago — Based on fact. As the war winds down in Italy, Mussolini joins a caravan filled with looted treasure, Germans, and Italians in an attempt to reach Switzerland. But he’s captured by partisans on Lake Como and the treasure is impounded. Within six days Mussolini and his mistress are executed and the treasure, some 90 million dollars worth of gold, jewelry and priceless art, disappears. Published by Doubleday and Dell, and both hard cover and paper in Great Britain.

Stalag Texas — Christmas Eve, 1944. A select group of German POWs seize hostages and break out of the MacLean Detention Camp in West Texas, heading for New Mexico and America’s secret A-bomb facility in Los Alamos. Only the hostages, Captain Edward Dryden and an American nurse, know where the Germans are headed. With little hope of rescue, Dryden must stop the POWs before they reach their goal, or die knowing the Germans are one step closer to ultimate victory. Published by Pocket Books.
